Ige's Budget Taps $9.5M for Maui Hospitals

In his executive two-year budget released Monday, Gov. David Ige has included $9.5 million to help fund the takeover of Maui Memorial Medical Center by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.

The funds, if approved by the Legislature, are for fiscal 2018, which begins July 1, 2017. The transition is also scheduled for July.

PUC Denies Plea by Solar Providers to Raise Cap

The state Public Utilities Commission denied a request last week by a coalition of solar industry groups to raise the interim cap on small-scale rooftop solar photovoltaic systems that export power to the islandwide grid.

County Jobless Rate Improves

Maui County's jobless rate dipped half a percentage point to 3 percent last month compared to 2015, the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations reported Thursday.

The rate was even lower for Maui island, 2.9 percent, which was down from 3.3 percent in November 2015.
