Hawaii begins study of undersea power cable plan

HONOLULU - Hawaii on Thursday began environmental planning for a project that would lay power cables along the ocean floor to connect wind farms on the gusty islands of Molokai and Lanai to electricity-hungry Honolulu.

Telescope atop Haleakala aims to ensure Earth ‘slightly safer

HALEAKALA - A new 1.8-meter telescope has begun surveying the skies, looking for killer asteroids, the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy announced Wednesday.

The Pan-STARRS telescope began working May 13, the institute said, to make the world "a slightly safer place."

Survey: Hotel occupancy rate for Maui on the rise

Maui hotel occupancies continued to gain in April, according to the survey released today by Hospitality Advisors.

The Maui rate, 66.7 percent, would not be considered good even though April is a "shoulder" month, but it was a lot better than the 56.2 percent in April 2009.

The statewide rate was 65.4 percent, also a gain from the 62.8 percent of the year before.

Hawaii’s recovery begun, but slow

Hawaii's economy has hit bottom and is bouncing back up, according to a county-by-county forecast by University of Hawaii economists.

It will be a slow bounce, according to the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization in a report issued today.
